Saturday, June 8:  Lovelock, Nevada to Winnemucca, Nevada
Distance:  73.1 miles
Total time:  6 hours 42 minutes
Riding time:  5 hours 35 minutes

It was in the 30s when we woke up this morning in Lovelock, and walked to the Cowpoke Cafe for breakfast.   We don't get to eat there everyday, but I wish we did.  At the Cowpoke Cafe they understand portions and service.

Today was a lovely ride under a pure blue sky, temperatures in the 50s and 60s most of the day.  We had a quartering headwind most of the day which slowed us down, but not as fierce as yesterday's.  We spent some time on the Interstate again, though there is little traffic out here, but also some prime time on Nevada's back roads.  The scenery looked like this, all day long:

I rode again with Jamie from Maine and Michael from Ohio.  We bike at the same speed and work well together.  Today we did a lot of "pace line" or peloton biking, in which each rider takes turns leading (and breaking the wind).  It uses a lot less energy than biking by yourself, and keeps you focused.  Here are Jamie and Michael, seemingly on the road to nowhere:

At a SAG (service and gear) stop I met a couple from New Hampshire (Amherst to be exact) who are driving west in their camper.  They were delighted that we are headed to New Hampshire as our goal.

Our route barely bypassed Reno and passes north of Las Vegas, but we will hit other large cities in Nevada, like this one that we rolled through this afternoon:

I hate to jinx us, but tomorrow is a relatively "easy" day of 55 miles, mostly on the Interstate.  But the really long days are just around the next corner.
